Rappenloch: hiking trail closed during the week

Work on clearing the creek bed below the Rappenloch bridge has resumed. Therefore, the jetty in this area must also be closed between Monday and Friday.

"The closure is necessary for safety reasons," reports Mayor Dipl.-Vw. Andrea Kaufmann and adds, "At least on weekends, the popular hiking trail can remain open. We hope to complete this next and important stage in the gorge by mid-December."

With the clearing of the streambed, the flow of the Ebniter Ach can be ensured again. "The closure during the construction work serves to protect the workers in the stream bed. Since blasting will be necessary again and again, however, hikers must also be guided around the construction site at an appropriate safety distance," adds Tiefbaustadtrat, Vice Mayor Markus Fässler. The detour is clearly signposted on site.

Provided that all work can be completed on schedule in the coming months, the construction site in the Rappenloch and the new construction of the Rappenloch Bridge should be completed before the summer. The renovations in the ravine and the new construction of the bridge were necessary due to two large rockfalls. It was particularly important to restore a flow for the Ebniter Ach, since the stream behind the debris cone regularly dammed up and a surge of water was to be feared, especially during floods. This danger was already eliminated in the spring. The clearing currently underway is intended to ensure that the Staufensse can also be sustainably managed again.

The Rappenloch is not only an important recreational area for the local population and an excursion destination for visitors to the town, the bridge above the gorge is also a core part of the Ebniterstrasse, which connects Dornbirn with its Walser village. Several rockfalls have taken their toll on the gorge and the bridge in recent years. The pioneer bridge built after the first rockfall had to be removed two years ago and an emergency connection between Dornbirn and Ebnit next to Lake Staufen had to be built. It was also no longer possible to manage the Staufensee. The rehabilitation work in this area is being carried out as part of an overall project: securing the rock walls, clearing the gorge, rebuilding the Rappenloch bridge and repairing Lake Staufen.
