Alpabtrieb in Dornbirn
The Alpabtrieb in Dornbirn is a significant cultural event deeply rooted in the region's traditions. After a successful summer on the alpine pastures, the herders return to the valley with their livestock. This custom is not only culturally important but also crucial for the preservation of the cultural landscape and recreational areas in the region.
This year, a total of 2,500 animals will be driven from the approximately 40 Dornbirn alpine pastures down to the valley on three different dates. The most notable event is the grand Alpabtrieb, which will take place on Saturday, September 14th. Organized by the Hatler Musig, this event will be held at the parking lot of the Waldbad Enz. The festivities will start at 11:00 AM, where guests will be entertained with music and refreshments while around 370 head of cattle are brought down to the valley.
To ensure the safe passage of the livestock, the Gütlestraße will be closed to traffic on the two main dates, September 14th and 28th. These closures are necessary to guarantee the safety of the animals, herders, and spectators.
The Alpabtrieb is not only a celebration for the local community but also a symbol of the close connection between farmers and nature.
